Positive Women Inc. is a support organisation for Women and Families living with HIV and AIDS. We are also involved in HIV advocacy, awareness and destigmatisation.

Women represent the invisible face of the HIV and AIDS epidemic. These are women who lead the very usual life of the average woman. Women who run households, cook dinner, have jobs, raise families and have grandchildren. Often these women look after sick partners and keep everything together.

Web Torque and Central Station

The brief was to get the old flash website working across all platforms and add a CMS behind it. We achieved this and then some, everything can be changed by Central Station, not just the content or online

IE7 CSS Background Colour Issue

Recently had an issue with IE7 not showing the background colour for a div.

The basic layout was a navigation on the left and content on the right. The background colour for the left hand navigation is supposed to extend to the bottom of the page. To achieve this I put the background colour on the containing div and set the background of the content to white, leaving just the left hand navigation with the background colour. This worked fine in all browsers except IE7 where the background colour wouldn't show.

I'm sure I've tried this technique a number of times before, but for some reason this time it wasn't working in IE7. After experimenting I found that adding padding or a border to the containing div would make it render correctly. The final "fix" was to put a border around the containing div set to the same colour as page background. I can only assume that it is yet another rendering bug in IE7.

The Coffee Guy Intranet, franchisee event booking system, whatever you want to call it, we did it, stage one is live and kicking. It makes the lives of those at the helm of TCG easier. Events can come into the application via website, franchisee or the TCG. Franchisees can even accept an event via text which then emails the application using text to email technology.

Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) Auto Resizing Bug

A day wouldn't be complete with a bug. I am using jquery to slide down content like an accordian. The containing div resizes automatically when the content inside resizes. This all works great until you get to Internet Explorer 8 (IE8), the containing div automatically gets larger, but doesn't decrease when the content decreases. Works in IE7, but not IE8 (scratching my head).

Couldn't find any information about the bug for a possible elegant fix, ended up calculating the size as I go and resizing accordingly.

Firefox Ajax Bug

Ran into an annoying little firefox bug just yesterday. It seems firefox doesn't pass on headers to subsequent ajax requests if there is a redirect. The header being important as it tells the server that it is an ajax request. To compound the issue, the redirect is handled natively by the brower and there is no way to intercept this to change the behaviour.

This issue came about due to a logged in session expiring, by default the framework will redirect to the login page. I was hoping to return just the login form and not the whole login page if it is an ajax request, but firefox prevents me from detecting it is an ajax request.

Seem to be having a few firefox issues of late, hopefully the workaround isn't too messy.

Open Source, dispelling the myths

Open source technologies are wide spread throughout the tech world, many top 500 companies have based their business around them. Most web servers (63.9% according to survey by W3Techs, in August 2011) use linux, which is an open source operating system. This is also used by companies like Google and Facebook to run their world leading infrastructures. Most of Facebook’s technologies are based around open source, from linux servers, to PHP and MySQL, and more advanced performance technologies like Memcache and Cassandra. Apple’s operating system Mac OS X was originally based off the open source FreeBSD, NetBSD and Unix operating systems. These same underlying technologies are used in their mobile operating system found in iPhone and iPads.

In the performance world of supercomputers, linux is used on 91% of computers (top 500). The Android mobile operating system is based on linux, with latest estimates suggesting it has 38% of the market share in the US (Apple’s iOS only has 27%).

Many governments have started using open source technologies, some even going as far as to recommend them over proprietary solutions. The US Department of Defense makes wide use of open source technologies (defense department list. Countries such as Brazil, Finland, France, Germany and Italy have shown a preference for open source technologies (for a full list click here).

In the world of websites there are many open source platforms widely used:

Wordpress: a blogging platform developed in PHP, in 2010 Microsoft dropped their msn spaces in favour of migrating their uses to the wordpress platform.

Drupal: an open source Content Management System based developed in PHP. It has been used for a wide range of sites including the Science and Engineering branch at Harvard, NASA, celebrity sites (Eric Clapton, Jennifer Lopez and many more). The estimated install base is in the millions.

PHP language: Used on sites such as Facebook, Wikipedia, Digg. According to W3Techs (see more sites using php) PHP is used on 76.8% of web servers.

Open source technologies take advantage of many developers with differing expertise to constantly improve and test, often making them some of the most stable and secure technologies. With the wide adoption it means many bugs and security vulnerabilities, which might be missed by a smaller team working on a proprietary product, are found. This also offers rapid advancement with many people adding features over time which everyone can benefit from. Open source also enables the adoption of mature and well tested technologies and code. Newer code might not have been as thoroughly tested or widely used and more likely to contain bugs and security vulnerabilities. Open source or proprietary solutions are no guarantee of good code, both can suffer from this problem. Badly written open source solutions, however, are unlikely to get community uptake and survive for very long.

CMS basic overview

The SilverStripe CMS is arranged in five sections. This is the basic start to the CMS. Tells you where you need to go to edit certain aspects of your website.

Navigation tabs

Location: upper bar

The Navigation Tabs allow you to navigate to the main groups in SilverStripe CMS. Here, you can choose to manage pages, your stock of files and images, or your website's comments. You can also get reports on pages, and get help. Some modules and options will add additional tabs here. Click on the relevant tab to display the associated information in the current window.

Specific tabs may change depending on what modules are installed. However, the following tabs are part of a typical SilverStripe installation:

Pages

This section enables you to access and edit the content of the pages on your website. On this tab, two extra "sub-tabs" are displayed in the left pane that enable you to display a History of editing events and a list of Reports incorporated within the system.

Files & Images

By clicking on "Files & Images" icon, the screen will display a list of all folders containing uploaded files and images. This hierarchical view enables you to locate and select the file you wish to edit, delete or move.

Comments

If you have page comments enabled anywhere on the site, you can use this section to view and moderate them.

Reports

This section shows reports for your site, for example, pages with broken links. What you see in this section will depend on which version of SilverStripe you are running, and what modules you have installed.

Security

The Security section enables you to set up and administrate users and user groups. The various security groups are displayed in the left pane and the details of the selected group are displayed in the right pane. Amongst other things, this enables you to add and remove members from selected groups and control the access these users have to pages.

Help

Help provides direct access to SilverStripe user help.

Contents pane

Location: left side

The Contents Pane displays the contents of the currently selected navigation tab in a hierarchical format. For example, when looking at the "Pages" navigation tab, the Contents pane will show you a sitemap, listing all of the pages on the site. Pages can be nested, so to expand the view to include subpages, click on the "+" icon. If you wish to collapse the views, you can click on the "-" icon.

Editing pane

Location: largest section, on the right side.

Once you have selected an item in the contents pane, the contents and properties of that item will be displayed in the right pane on a number of tabbed pages. (These tabbed pages may also contain a subset of tabbed pages). This pane enables you to edit the content and properties of selected items. For example, if you were to click on a webpage in the Contents pane, the Editing Pane would show you the content on that page, and let you edit it. When editing content, the Editing Pane is "WYSIWYG" - or "What You See Is What You Get." You can use the toolbar in the editing pane to edit the webpage's content, much like you would in a word processor.

Sub-tabs

Location: On the bottom of the contents pane

These normally hidden, but expandable subtabs are typically only available in Pages view. They provide quick information about page version history, so you can easily roll back to an earlier version of a page, if need be, and site reports which detail pages that need urgent work or have not changed in a while.

View bar

Location: on the very bottom of the screen

The View Bar allows you to switch between the three views available within SilverStripe CMS: the editing view of the CMS, how your proposed website will look when and if it is published, and what the current, live, published page looks like. Additionally, you can find on the right side of the View Bar a place to logout or alter your user profile.

Creating and editing content

How do you create a page in the cms? Edit? Format? Simple, follow the instructions and you can not fail.

1. Learn how to create a new page.

2. Learn how to write content for that page.

3. Learn how to create links.

4. Learn how to save your page as a draft and publish to live.

Make sure you are in the "Pages" section on the Navigation Tabs.

Creating a new page

To create a new page, first decide where in the site you want your page to be. If you are creating a new "subpage," click on the parent page in the left-hand Contents Pane you would like to create the subpage in. If you want your site to be in the top level navigation for your site, you should click on the root of the site - the first item listed in the Contents Pane.

On the top of the Contents Pane, you will find a button marked "Create." Click it, and a drop-down menu will show up.

The default selection should be "Page," but if it's not, go ahead and select "Page." Then hit the "Go" button.

You will notice that a new page has been created, with the name of "New Page." (You will also notice it's color, Yellow. Yellow pages are "new" and have never been published.)

Simply click on the new page in the content page to bring it up in the editing pane.

Writing content

In the Editing Pane, to edit content, you want to click on the "Content" tab if it it not already selected, and then the "Main" page.

Here you will be presented with three forms.

The first is for the Page Name - this will define what the page will be known as in the CMS, but it will also be used to form the "default" navigation label and URL for the page, though both can be changed manually.

Below it, you will find the Navigation Label. This will define what the page will show up as when listed in site navigation on the public-facing front page of your site. If you fill in the Page Name first, it will automatically put the page name in the navigation label field. It is usually, but not always, a good idea to leave it the same. If you wish to change the navigation label but not the page name, you can do so here.

Finally, there is the Content box. This will contain the bulk of text to appear on your webpage. Type the text that will appear in the page on the Website. You may also feel free to use the formatting toolbar at the top of the content screen in order to format your page the way you would prefer.

Formatting content

This is the formatting toolbar:

Generally, most items in the formatting toolbar will behave much like they would in any word processor. There are a few exceptions.

For example, the Styles drop-down box allows you to add certain styles to a page. This is primarily used to add image styles to a link of downloadable content, for example, links to PDF or Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, or images.

The Paragraph drop-down box allows you to choose a format for that paragraph in HTML code. Most typed paragraphs will be in the normal "paragraph" format, but there are also six levels of "headings."

Headings represent the outline organization of a document. H1 is generally considered the highest level of the document, while H6 is the lowest level. By using the "Heading" paragraph formats, it will automatically make all paragraphs marked with the same heading number the same format. And, if you want to change the style of your page at a later date, your web designer will only need to change the heading definitions in one place, rather than changing the format of multiple headings in your text individually. This can be a big timesaver!

The "Blockquote" button is used to offset text in what those in the newspaper industry call "pull-quotes." Simply highlight the text you want to offset, and press the blockquote button.

Finally, the "Insert Horizontal Ruler" button will insert a horizontal line on the page, and the "Insert Special Character" button, marked by the Greek Omega symbol, is used to insert special characters into the text. This is useful for foreign loanwords with special symbols, such as "resumé," proper names such as "François Mitterrand," and metal umlauts, such as "Mötley Crüe"

There is one other button that needs explanation. That is the button marked "HTML." If you want to go in and edit the source code of the page directly, pressing the HTML button will bring up the HTML source of the page. It is recommended that you only do this if you have a good knowledge of HTML formatting. This can be useful when you need to directly add some source code to a page, for example, when embedding YouTube videos.

Creating hyperlinks in webpages

To create a hyperlink in a webpage, highlight the text you wish to make a link in the Editing Pane, and press the "Insert Link" button on the toolbar. This will bring up the Link sidebar on the right side of the screen.

Creating a link to another page on the site

To link to another page on the site, choose "Page on the Site" from the list of options on the top of the Link sidebar. You can then select the page you want to link to from the drop-down box. Your "Link Text" should be automatically filled in with the highlighted text in the Editing Pane. Check "Open link in a new window" if you would like to have the link opened in a new window when the user clicks on it.

Finally, to insert the link, click the "Insert Link" button on the Link sidebar.

Creating a link to an external page

To link to a page on another website, choose "Another Website" from the list of options on the top of the Link sidebar. You can then paste or type in the URL of the webpage you would like to link to in the "URL" field on the sidebar. Your "Link Text" should be automatically filled in with the highlighted text in the Editing Pane. Check "Open link in a new window" if you would like to have the link opened in a new window when the user clicks on it.

Finally, to insert the link, click the "Insert Link" button on the Link sidebar.

Creating a link to an email address

To link to an e-mail address, choose "Email Address" from the list of options on the top of the Link sidebar. You can then paste or type in the e-mail address that you would like to link to. Your "Link Text" should be automatically filled in with the highlighted text in the Editing Pane.

Finally, to insert the link, click the "Insert Link" button on the Link sidebar.

Saving your page as a draft

To save your page as a draft, simply hit the "Save" button (not "Save and Publish," if it is available) on the bottom right hand corner of the Editing Pane. Saving your page as a draft allows you to preview the page on a "Draft Site" available to you and others who have access to the CMS, but does not publish the page to the live website.

After you save your page as a draft, you can preview the page by clicking on "Draft Site" in the View Bar on the bottom left hand corner of the screen.

Remember to save early and often.

Publishing your page, or submitting your page for publication:

If your website has a workflow module installed, and you do not have administrative privileges, you can submit your draft changes for publication to your site's administrator by pressing the "Request Publication" button. This will send notification to your site's administrator that the webpage is ready for review.

If you do not have the workflow module installed, or you are the site's administrator, you can publish the page at any time by hitting the "Save and Publish" button. Once the "Save and Publish" button is pressed, that information will go out to the live web, so be careful that you are not publishing embarrassing typos, confidential information, or anything you would generally get rebuked by your organization's legal council for publishing.

You can view the published site directly by clicking on "Published Site" in the View Bar on the bottom left hand corner of the screen.

Working with images and documents

There are two ways to upload images: a relatively simple way for single images, or if you have multiple images to upload, a more robust way. Once the image has been uploaded it can be used in multiple pages on the site.

Uploading single images

The simplest way to insert an image stored on your local hard drive into a webpage is to go to that webpage in the Pages tab, and click the "Insert Images" button on the toolbar in the Editing Pane. (It's the picture of the little tree). This will bring up, on the right side of the editing pane, the Images sidebar.

In the Images sidebar, choose "upload file." This will open up the upload file form. Press the button labeled "Choose File." You can then upload a file from your hard drive. A small thumbnail of the image should appear in the Images sidebar.

Uploading multiple images

To upload multiple images, click on the "Files & Images" tab in the Navigation Tabs on the top of the page. (Be sure to save any page you are working on in the editing page to a draft before doing so, otherwise you may lose any changes you have made since the last save).

Click on the "Upload" tab in the main area of the CMS (where the Editing pane would normally be). From the upload tab, click on the "Choose File" button to choose your first file to upload. Repeat this process for every file you wish to upload. When all of the files you with to upload are listed, click the "Upload Files Listed Below" button to upload all the images.

Inserting uploaded images

Once you have uploaded an image, you can insert it into any document. Make sure the document you want to add the image to is in the Editing Pane, then click on the "Insert Images" button. This should bring up thumbnails for images uploaded to the site. If you do not see the image you want, it may be in another folder. You can choose which folder you would like to view by clicking on the "Folder" drop-down box on the top of the Image sidebar. Additionally, you can use the provided search box to search by the image's filename.

When you see the image you want, click on the image to select it. You can then add alternative text, which is shown if the image cannot be displayed (for example, on text-only web browsers, or screen readers for the blind) and title text, which shows additional information about the image when the mouse rolls over the image. If you wish to add a caption, you can do so. You can also choose the alignment and text wrapping properties of the image as well as the dimensions of the image to be displayed in the site.

When you are done entering this information, hit the "Insert Image" button on the bottom right of the Images sidebar. This will place the image in your text where your cursor was in the editing pane.

Uploading and linking to documents

To upload documents, such as PDF files, Word .DOC documents, and downloadable audio and video files, click on the "Files & Images" tab in the Navigation Tabs on the top of the page.

When all of the files you with to upload are listed, click the "Upload Files Listed Below" button to upload all the documents.

To link to documents, return to the page you wish to create the link in by clicking on the "Pages" Navigation tab, and choose the page you wish to edit. Highlight the text you would like to make into a hyperlink, and choose "Download a file" from the list of options on the top of the Link sidebar. You may choose the document from the dropdown menu, or type in the filename or part of the filename to conduct a search for the document. Your "Link Text" should be automatically filled in with the highlighted text in the Editing Pane.

Finally, to insert the link, click the "Insert Link" button on the Link sidebar. In the page, there will be a small icon indicating that the link leads to a document, and the document type will be apparent from the icon. For example, PDF files will show an Adobe Acrobat document icon.

Managing files

To manage your uploaded files, head to the "Files & Images" tab in the Navigation Tabs at the top of the page. The Contents Pane on the left side of the screen will now show a list of the directories that hold files in your website. This includes both images and documents such as PDF files, and can also include javascript files.

Creating, moving, and deleting folders

You can create new folders to store images and documents by clicking on the "Create" button on the top of the Contents Pane. The newly created folder will be placed as a subfolder of whatever folder you currently have selected.

To re-order folders, you can check the "Allow drag & drop reordering" option near the top of the Contents pane, then you can simply drag and drop the folders and place them where you would like within the site's hierarchy. (When you are done, it is a good idea to uncheck "Allow drag & drop reordering" in order to avoid inadvertantly dragging and dropping folders accidentally).

To delete a folder, click on the folder you wish to delete in the Contents Pane and press "Delete Folder." This will bring up check boxes next to every folder; if you wish to delete multiple folders, you may select those folders at that time. Making sure that only the folders you want to delete are selected, you may then delete them by pressing the "Delete the selected folders" button.

Searching for images and documents

To search for an image, type the whole or partial filename in the "Search" field in the Files tab in the Editing Pane.

Moving and deleting images and documents

To move a document, select the folder it is in, and choose the Files tab in the Editing Pane. Locate the file, (you may need to browse through multiple pages using the arrow keys if there are a large number of images in the folder), and then drag and drop the file to any folder in the Contents pane by dragging the "Drag" bar next to each file listing.

Renaming images and documents

To rename a document, select the folder it is in, and choose the Files tab in the Editing Pane. Locate the file, (you may need to browse through multiple pages using the arrow keys if there are a large number of images in the folder), and then press the "Edit" icon to the right of the document listing. A pop-up window will appear, and you can rename the document. Hit "Save," and close the popup window.

Deleting images and documents

To rename a document, select the folder it is in, and choose the Files tab in the Editing Pane. Locate the file, (you may need to browse through multiple pages using the arrow keys if there are a large number of images in the folder), and then press the "Delete" icon to the right of the document listing.

Web designers and companies know that the industry involves plenty of tweaks and changes, and continuous adaption and development of skills is required in order to stay up to date with the demands of teh user. In the past few years, the biggest area of change has been the amount of Internet users who are looking at websites via phones and mobile devices. As a result, Web designers have a growing need to be educated in this area and ready to design websites that accommodate this audience.

Designing websites for mobile devices brings some unique situations and challenges into play as you not using the same screen sizes/resolutions, the subject requires a strategic approach from the designer and developer.

Here at Web Torque we have gone mobile, now offering clients a mobile module if they use are CMS.

Website are nothing without good content.

Waves of dissatisfaction sink in when users have to wait an extra nanosecond that we do not have for the flash intro to load. Then, seeing a lack of well-written compact information amidst the graphics and designs, deeper irritation have now officially stunted users appetite to browse through your site. Impressive graphics they may be, engaging with the average consumer/visitor online is not as easy as attracting a kid with bright coloured cards despite the similar attention span.

Web design and web development is the first and most crucial PR campaign you have to tackle especially if you're an e-commerce shop.

How to use this to your profit?

Consumers First. People are interested in people who are interested in them. Treat your site as your salesman/customer service person. He doesn’t talk about himself, he talks about the customers. He grabs your attention and stimulates your emotions. He builds your interest and keeps you involved. He establishes credibility and trust and then he persuades you to take action. Competent web design agencies would have the capability to accommodate abundant of ways to convey your information.

Crystal Clear and Concise. Keep your language clear and plain. Avoid professional jargons and lingos if you can. Writing your content in plain English is as important as having a web design that is simple and effective.

Stay Relevant. Keep Your Readers. Websites tend to get skimmed not read, so it is beneficial for you if you divide your contents into chunks with outlined key points. The framework of the site should enable users to browse through and easily find key content. Use sub-heads to help navigation; colours, fonts and background shading to give emphasis. It is crucial to keep your website up to date and to collaborate with the web development agency with anything that you might want to change.

Grab Focus. A compelling headline is not equals to tabloid-like headlines. Address your reader's interests in one word. New Release, How to, Revealed” are the most common and the simplest phrases that has proven to be efficient.

Scan Proof. Scan proofing is when words or phrases in paragraphs of a text are highlighted in bold or colours. This method takes advantage of the tendency of readers to skim web content rather than read the whole text. To maximise the benefit, the highlighted words if put together in the readers mind, should form a rough sentence of their own.

Test, Check, Test. Analyze every single element of your web-site over and over again, such as the headlines, the offers, body copy, design etc. Test one element at a time and allow enough time to measure results. On the matter of the design of your web, your hired web design and web development agency should already have tried and tested design ideas or guidelines (not a template design) that can be personalised to your own brand. However, on the matter of your content, only you can give us users a personalised and engaging experience. A clear communication and strong cooperation between you and the web development company can produce very powerful results.

Microsoft marked the kick off of the latest version of its web browser with a party at the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas. The unveiling of Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) marks the latest update from the three most popular browsers round the world, as they brawl for share of how customers will view the internet as it moves into the next generation of HTML 5.A ten years ago, the browser was used to look at simple text and images. Now they are shifting to deal with HTML5, an advanced set of web commands that help a browser to show streaming media and animation without methods such as Flash. A superior manager at Microsoft said: "The vast majority of customers will soon have a HTML5 browser. This will be a big progression in the history of the web."As the browsers change, the market is more competitive than ever as use of the internet rises. Internet Explorer still rules the browser market, but has decreased from over 90 per cent less than 10 years ago to 57 per cent this year, according to Net Applications. The change over started in 2004 when Mozilla launched Firefox, a not-for-profit open source initiative. Jay Sullivan, vice-president of products at Mozilla, said: "Now competition is good. There are three or four modern browsers out there. It's a vibrant market, rich competition helps." He added that Microsoft's new browser was a "Mozilla achievement. We introduced competition, now we have IE9."
